It's been a long time since the original fab-five of new wave have played
together on the same stage aside from a few sporadic club shows and sold-out
string of shows at Wembley a year or two back. Back in support of one of
their finest albums ('Astronaut', out now on Epic Records), the latest tour
is as visually top-notch as it is sonically.
Playing to a near packed house at the Wachovia Spectrum in Philadelphia
Saturday night, it was the only place in the country where 40 year old men
were still making the girls (although more grown up) cry with excitement.
Consisting of a seamless integration of their 'Greatest' release on EMI a
few years back and nearly half of their 'Astronaut' release, the two hour
long set easily will take the crown as one of the finest shows of the year.
Looking like time hasn't passed at all and "Rio" and "Hungry Like The Wolf"
were still in non-stop rotation on the radio, Andy and John Taylor rocked
out like there was no tomorrow, Simon Lebone belted out every note, and a
bit more subdued but none less entertaining were Roger Taylor and Nick
Rhodes.
A friend once said that Duran Duran were the 'Led Zepplin of their genre',
and tonight was no greater testament to that. Back in solid form, at their
prime, and as entertaining as ever, check out this tour if you get a chance,
and of course pick up 'Astronaut'.
