New Music: Duran Duran - Duran Duran [Special Edition]
Anyone who has read this site for more than five minutes knows how big of a Duran Duran fan I am, and so it is probably a forgone conclusion any review of new and re-released material will feature me prominently humping their leg for at least 5% of the time. While a new album is still being put together in never-never land, good re-releases continue to come down the pipe line. Following a “Rio” re-release and “Live At Hammersmith ‘82!” CD/DVD release, they have continued to exceed expectations.
This two CD, one DVD set features a nice digital remaster of the iconic debut that propelled them to heights rarely touched before or since then. Being The Fab Five is no easy feat. In addition to the remastered album, a few added b-sides from 7″ and 12″ singles are tacked up. The second CD continues the b-sides and rarities parade with live takes from AIR Studios (1980), Demos (also 1980), a BBC Radio 1 session with Peter Powell, and for god measure a few couple of previous unreleased mixes and the now classic Night versions for good measure.
If one is still hungry for more a DVD comes with a hefty amount of promo videos and TV performances that have not seen the light of day since they aired three decades ago.
All in all it is a nicely presented package. The remastered sound is great and the wealth of previously unreleased material provides ample temptation even to those who thought they had it all.
