The August Rehash
So it’s the middle of the month, and now it’s time for a trip down memory lane, to a month that was a mere 15 days ago. What did August have to offer us in terms of new releases? Some that sparkled and some that didn’t.
Aberdeen City - The Freezing Atlantic (Columbia)
Getting a make over with the help of Steve Lillywhite, Aberdeen City re-release their latest offering. While seemingly mostly overlooked up until this point, it’s a solid release and nice bunch of guys. We certainly hope for some success in their future.
Deadsy - Phantasmagore (Immortal)
Deadsy have created a signature sound all their own. It is at the same time a positive and a negative. They have stepped it up on this album compared to their last one, and it is an overall enjoyable experience, but it still doesn’t really expand out from the same signature formula of droning guitars and vocals. Deadsy have discovered the strength and tightened the formula for this time around.
Godhead - The Shadow Line (Cement Shoes)
Fans of old Godhead would not recognize this band any more. Jason Miller’s vocal stylings sure, but musically, this band is not even on the same planet as “Power Tool Stigmata” and “2000 Years Of Human Error”. The tracks make stabs at crafting radio rock hits, and succeed, but at the same time sacrifice Godhead’s actual song writing power. It may garner them some new fans, but I’m sure the current fan base will be left wanting a little more. This one will probably be more for the new fans then the old ones.
Kill Hannah - Until There’s Nothing Left Of Us (Atlantic)
Chicago’s sweethearts were expected to be the next big thing with their Atlantic debut a few years back and nothing ever really came of it. Who knows if this go-around will be any more successful for them, but their latest is a bit more rock and still a bunch of glam and vocals to make the unknowing think it’s a lady singing. Overall good album.
Outkast - Idlewild
The duo are once again seperated for this round of songs, but the results are still fruitful. Serving as the sound track to their feature film, the songs are still up to Outkast quality with their funky fresh hip-hop infused with a flair only they could bring.
The Panic Channel - (ONe) (Capitol)
Jane’s Addiction with a new singer? Pretty much. While the line up is eerily similar, the group left the alternative scene behind and instead crafted a catchy and enjoyable rock album. While it’s more standard fare then what I’d like from somewhat like Navarro wielding the guitar, it is overall a solid release.
Pete Yorn - Nightcrawler (Columbia)
With a little help from his friends (Butch Walker and Don Fleming), Pete’s third studio album is a notch above his previous releases, balancing between a host of styles that make for a strong first have and a pleasant second half.
Powerman 5000 - Destroy What You Enjoy (DRT)
They’ve been through a lot the past few years, and the group have managed to land on their feet, somewhat. The album has a few solid tracks and a few not so-solid tracks. The group hold on to some of their signature sounds but at times go for a more bluesy-rock feel that doesn’t work for them. While the skip button is required for a few tracks, it has it’s moments.
Sigur Ros - Saeglopuir (Filter)
While it’s not the new album once could hope for, this CD/DVD package does contain the single it’s named after as well as some new tracks, plus a DVD featuring the bands always fantastic videos.
Tegan & Sara - It’s Not Fun, Don’t Do It! (DVD) (Sanctuary)
Ah, that’s a lot of Tegan & Sara. A live show from Pheonix, AZ, all the groups video, a making of documentary and more. Ah, but who we kidding? Does the charm of the sisters ever wear off? We think not!
Under The Influence Of Giants - Under The Influence Of Giants (Island)
A toxic cocktail of the Beegee’s meets Sly meets whoever else you can think of. This group will probably fly under the radar and top out at ‘buzz band’ status, but it’s some sweet music no matter which way you shake it and even if you are the only one who knows about them.
Also out this month….
Ani DiFranco - Reprieve (Righteous Babe)
Primal Scream - Riot City Blues (Columbia)
Ray LaMontagne - Till The Sun Turns Black (RCA)
Razorlight - Razorlight (Universal)
