May 08′ Rehash

Catch up continues…

The Dresden Dolls - No, Virginia (Roadrunner)
As the time continues to pass from months to years since “Yes, Virginia” came out, this latest release of various kinds of tracks comes together in a package that sounds less of a collection of left overs and close to a complete album. the piano and drum duo take what almost anybody else would make boring and turn them into powerful and epic tracks. With five reworked tracks, a cover, a b-side, a couple of unreleased tracks from the “Yes, Virginia…” sessions, old demos, etc., etc… it is worth the price of admission.

Filter - Anthems Of The Damned (Pulse)
Filter returns after a long hiatus. With his shit back together, Richard Patrick finds himself traversing in a sound reminiscent of his earlier Filter years. John 5, Wes Borland, Josh Freese, Josh Abraham and others take various guest spots on the album that finds itself bouncing back and forth between hard-rocking tracks and more atmospheric affairs.

We Are Scientists - Brain Thrust Mastery (Astralwerks)
We Are Scientists seem to be in flux. Sure, “sophomore slump” is an easy excuse but listening through their latest effort it seems something more is afoot. The charm and easy-breezy feel of their debut is lost in what seems like a sea of self-doubt and at times self-loathing. This is not to say it is void of any of the post-punk, indie rock and often times catchy chorus’s that propelled them to the greatness the first time around, but that these guys are way to talented to be so down in the dumps. While still a good go around this time, I still would place bets on these guys returning to greatness in the very near future.
