New Music: MSTRKRFT
Ah, MSTRKRFT. One of my own personal most anticipated albums of 2009. It has been a long time coming. It is not quite in the league as the “Chinese Democracy” of the dance music scene, but these crazy Canadians have a lot to live up to with the long-delayed “Fist Of God”.
Featuring a whose-who of hip-hop and R&B including N.O.R.E, E-40, John Legend, Ghostface Killah and more take the album to a more song-oriented approach than it’s predecessor (2006’s “The Looks”). Most reviews have found the album meeting with tepid responses, and in some spots they aren’t too far off. Some bright spots shine through on the album such as “It Ain’t Love” and lead off single “Bounce”, but is at times you have to trudge through the mud to get to some more of the good stuff tucked towards the back.
Overall, this isn’t MSTRKRFT at their finest, but even on their worst day (which this album isn’t), they are still above and beyond most of their peers.
