New Music: Fever Ray [Fever Ray / Deluxe]
Karin Dreijer Andersson is better known as one half of The Knife, and solo as Fever Ray. In her recently released deluxe edition of her self-titled debut, one gets a glimpse into another magical recorded moment.
The Knife have proved to be for the most part silent since 2006’s break-through Silent Shout. While one is left to wonder whether or not they will make good on their threats to call it a day as a duo, one is left often mesmerized by the often stark music landscape presented on this debut release. Oddball synth and percussive sounds at times make their way onto this release and Karin’s distinctive voice is ever present, but make no mistake that this project stands in a realm all it’s own.
The compositions within are much starker, raw moribund then anything The Knife was capable of throwing at you on Silent Shout. The nakedness of the music itself forces Karin’s vocals to the forefront in ways never before demanded of her.
While most of those on top of their musical tastes have already had time to digest the album since it’s original release earlier this year, the modestly priced deluxe edition provides even more incentive to the uber-fan and casual listener who has been unsure if it’s worth the purchase price. With two additional bonus tracks, a complete live set which is up to the task of recreating the haunting atmosphere of the studio album and for good measure an extra DVD filled with additional music videos.
A perfect companion for a lonely winter evening.
