New Music: Rosanne Cash [The List]

As one listens through The List, one takes note of Rosanne Cash quickly emerging from the shadow of the Cash name to create a formidable brand and legacy all her own.

The resulting track listing coming from a list of essential country songs given to her by her father in 1973, Cash’s skills in interpreting the work of others rivals only her own song writing chops. Always elegant and earnest, her take on tracks such as Bob Dylan’s “Girl From North Country” and “She’s Got You” are beautiful, often haunting, and do the Cash name proud.

“Motherless Children”, a now public domain track, provides an intensely personal rendition that for me serves as the center point of the album. Famous friends Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Jeff Tweedy and Rufus Wainwright all lend their personal flair on their album cameos, further enhancing an already satisfying listening experience.
