New Music: Katy Perry [Unplugged]
Ah, an unavoidable pop music phenomenon since the summer of 2008, Katy Perry has been anywhere and everywhere with infectious pop hooks that have continued to keep her on top of the charts. Unplugged takes a way some of the pop gloss for a more intimate affair (per usual).
While the wave of Lady Gaga may have utterly dominated 2009’s pop landscape much in the way “I Kissed A Girl” did in 2008, the CD/DVD combo serves as a refresher course and breaths a bit of life into some some hit songs of her own and a cover for good measure. With a lounge take on the now overplayed “I Kissed A Girl” providing fresh perspective and a memorable take on Fountain Of Wayne’s “Hackensack”, Ms. Perry shows off a rawer, less over produced vocal style befitting of the evening.
The sole original new Katy original is “Brick By Brick”, which benefits the most from leaving little to compare to, while traversing into well established hits is often hit or miss for many people.
All in all an elegant evening for the party girl, looking as good as ever (and leaving many to curse Russell Brand). One can hope it is a side she can expose more often.
