New Music: David Bowie [Live In Santa Monica ‘72]

What once had floated around as a fan favorite bootleg for over twenty years has been given an official release in the states finally…. well, again. Originally an FM broadcast, with opening and closing DJ cuts included for good measure, this recording captures the October 20th, 1972 concert at Santa Monica Civic Auditorium.

Taken during the Ziggy Stardust tour, it has long been considered one of the standard-bearers for performances from that era. As a man (and band) in his (their) prime, the now legendary cuts sound solid and rival any of the other officially released recordings from that time. “Changes”, “Space Oddity”, “The Jean Genie”, “Suffragette City” and the rest of the eighteen tracks often times seem over before they began.

While some may be better served by a DVD chronicling the more visual aspects of the era, for those that put the music first and foremost this will be just fine.
