Recently Fallon was kind enough to talk with us about her new
solo effort entitled Amphibious Assault. With her new album District 6 being
released on her own label, it presents a departure from her metal notoriety with
a sound soothing to the ear.
To start off, for those who know you from your work
with Kittie, or not at all, give a description of
what Amphibious Assault is.
Fallon: Amphibious Assault is something I've always wanted to do. Its a combination of
all my influences and beliefs. Its melodic, its sad, its reflective. I don't
know what else to say.
Being open with your political opinions, a lot of
fellow musicians have been speaking out on the Iraq
issue, what are your views on the subject?
I tried having a conversation about this in my American History class last year
and it just turned into this divided mass of people that say that Americans
should stay out of Iraqi issues and leave them alone, the other half screaming
bloody murder about Saddam. I really don't know where to go with the subject.
This guy in my belief is pretty dangerous so something has to be done, but I
don't necessarily feel it should be war. What should it be? I don't know. Right
and Wrong is a hard thing to distinguish, cause everyone has different views on
what is and what isn't. I think its a shame that things have to be solved by
mass amounts of killing but in a way War is a part of human history, and I think
will continue on till the world explodes. What lessons should have been learned,
I don't know, I don't hold the answers. I don't know anyone that does.
What other events, past and recent, have been
influencing you and your writing?
Lots of things, not just politics. The opposite sex provides ample fuel for good
writing. Globalization and my Socialist Friends who like to talk to me about it
and I just try to look interested! (sorry guys!)
Has a label been selected for the effort to be released on? If so, which?
I will be releasing the record on my record label, Social Unrest Records.
How did it feel to be out recording and writing solo, compared to as in a
band?
Its definitely more fun, cause its just up to you, but their were elements of
being in a band that wrote everything together that was really cool. The magic
that arises from people bringing forth ideas and making it into a song is hard
to reproduce when solo.
What gave you the urge, or inspiration rather, to jump
back into music and do this type of sound?
I think when I went to go see VNV Nation play in Montreal I knew I wanted to get
Amphibious Assault going. They were so great in concert, I've never experienced
something like that before. I knew I didn't want to the metal route. I always
wanted to do something electronic, so it all came together.
How has the reaction been so far from fans, new and old?
Primarily positive, but some negative. Which will happen with everyone. I think
its gonna be good.
What is the meaning behind the title of the album,
District 6?
Originally the layout was gonna be about the times in District 6. Well, first
let me explain what District 6 is. District 6 was a region in Cape Town, South
Africa that under the apartheid government was bulldozed and destroyed because
they felt the land could be used for something better. There were thousands of colored,
black and poor white families living there, and without any regard to the
people's futures and situations, the government destroyed their lives. Its
saddened and sickened me and I decided to write a song about it. Its also close
to home, South Africa was where I was born.
Who would you like to collaborate with in the future?
Maynard from Tool maybe. I was thinking in the car yesterday how cool his voice
would sound over some really crazy electronic shit... ooo I can be good.
To sum it all up in one sentence, what would be the one
statement you wish to make with this album?
Hm.. .I'm not good with making statements, usually when I try they turn out
ultra cheesy. How bout... "I think I'm gonna shut up now and not try and
make a statement, this is my record, like it or hate it but be open minded"
